What is a Cone Crusher in Mining?
The Nordberg C160 Jaw Crusher is a heavy-duty, reliable primary crushing machine designed for demanding mining and aggregate production applications. As part of Metso’s renowned Nordberg C Series jaw crusher family, the C160 is engineered for long-term operation and minimal downtime. It is built to handle the toughest materials, providing high capacity and excellent reduction ratio, making it a cornerstone in large-scale stationary crushing plants.
What Materials Can the C160 Jaw Crusher Crush?
The C160 Jaw Crusher is built to process a wide range of hard and abrasive materials. Its robust construction allows it to handle:
Hard Rock Granite
Basalt
Quartzite
Gneiss
Abrasive Minerals like iron ore, copper ore, and gold ore
Recycled Concrete and construction demolition waste (in specific applications)
Essentially, the C160 is ideal for the primary crushing stage of any hard rock, whether in mining, quarrying, or large-scale aggregate production.

Key Features and Advantages of the C160 Jaw Crusher
The C160 stands out due to its superior engineering and focus on durability and efficiency.
Features:
Robust Frame Design: A non-welded, pinned and bolted frame construction ensures exceptional durability and reliability under high shock loads.
Large Feed Opening: The 1600 mm x 1200 mm (63″ x 47″) feed opening allows it to accept large boulders, maximizing feed capacity.
Durable Jaw Plates: Long-lasting jaw plates made from high-quality manganese steel reduce the frequency of replacement and lower operating costs.
Modular Design: Key components are designed for easy replacement and maintenance, reducing downtime.
Safety Features: Includes simple and safe adjustment systems and built-in safety mechanisms to protect operators and the equipment.
Advantages:
High Reliability & Uptime: Its heavy-duty construction minimizes the risk of unexpected failures, ensuring maximum operational availability.
Reduced Operating Costs: High efficiency and long service intervals for wear parts lead to a lower cost per ton of material crushed.
Excellent Crushing Efficiency: Optimized kinematics and a deep crushing chamber ensure a high reduction ratio and a well-shaped end product.
Proven Performance: As part of the world’s most popular C Series, the C160 benefits from decades of design refinement and field-proven success.
How Does the C160 Jaw Crusher Work?
The C160 operates on the principle of compressive crushing, often referred to as “jaw crushing.”
Feed Material: Rock is loaded into the crusher’s chamber from the top, between the fixed jaw die and the moving jaw die.
Crushing Action: The moving jaw (swing jaw) moves in an elliptical motion towards the fixed jaw. As it moves, it compresses the rock against the stationary jaw.
Material Breakdown: The immense pressure exerted by the jaws causes the rock to fracture and break into smaller pieces.
Discharge: The crushed material continues to move down the chamber, being progressively crushed until it is small enough to fall through the discharge opening at the bottom (the closed-side setting, or CSS). The size of the final product is determined by this CSS.
